Hut circle near North Hessary Tor

This is one of several stone hut circles that make up an unenclosed Bronze Age settlement on the high moor south of North Hessary Tor. The hut circle sits on the settlement's south eastern edge, part of a landscape that shows how people lived and worked on Dartmoor in prehistory. These settlements, without defensive walls, suggest communities that farmed the upland areas when the climate was warmer and the moor more extensively used.

Today the site is visible as a low circular stone structure among the moorland vegetation. Like many Bronze Age remains on Dartmoor, it offers a quiet moment to consider the deep history beneath your feet. The moor has changed much since these huts were occupied, yet the stones endure in the landscape where they were built.
