Cairn near Moortown Farm

This scheduled monument consists of a cairn, a mound of stones built over a stone burial chamber or cist. It dates to the Bronze Age, when such structures were common across Dartmoor, marking the graves of people who lived on or moved through the moor in the second millennium BC. The cist, a box-like tomb built from flat stones, would once have held human remains and grave goods.

Today the site stands on open moorland north east of Moortown, part of the landscape scattered with similar burial monuments. The cairn and cist remain as they were left thousands of years ago, surviving as evidence of how communities used and valued this high ground in prehistory. A visit offers a sense of the Bronze Age presence on Dartmoor and the enduring character of the moorland itself.
