This scheduled monument is a Bronze Age cairn, a burial mound built to mark and contain the remains of the dead. Within it lies a cist, a stone-lined burial chamber constructed from flat slabs. Such monuments are common across Dartmoor and speak to the presence of settled communities on the moor in the second millennium BC.
Today the site is a low, grass-covered mound in the moorland landscape, 400 metres east of Lydford Tor. Like many Dartmoor cairns, it has been subject to weathering and, historically, to disturbance. Visiting the site offers a sense of how the Bronze Age peoples used and valued this high ground, and how their monuments persist in the modern moor.
