Unenclosed hut circle settlement near Wedlake Farm

This scheduled monument preserves the remains of a prehistoric settlement comprising stone hut circles, associated field boundaries and a stretch of the Great Western Reave. The hut circles date from the Bronze Age, when communities on Dartmoor lived in small clusters of roundhouses, working the moorland for grazing and cultivation. The reave, a substantial boundary wall built from moorstone, runs through the site and is one of several linear divisions that shaped the Bronze Age landscape across Dartmoor.

Today, the site lies as scattered stonework in open moorland south of Wedlake Farm. Visiting requires cross-country walking over rough ground, but rewards those interested in how Dartmoor's earliest inhabitants used and organized the high ground. The reave remains a striking feature, a labour-intensive monument that speaks to Bronze Age community investment in land division and territorial management.
