Rival Tor hut circle settlements

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1020366) describes two hut circle settlements, an irregular aggregate field system and at least three cairns on the lower east-facing slope of Rival Tor, above the valley of the North Teign River. The scheduling falls into four areas. It lies in the parish of Gidleigh, about 1.7 km north-west of Scorhill Tor and 2.6 km west of Gidleigh.

The northern settlement lies in the field system and has at least six hut circles, circular or oval banks round spaces of 6 to 26 square metres, averaging 15, with walls 0.35 to 0.6 metres high. All have visible doorways and four are attached to field banks. The fields are winding low rubble banks, some lynchetted, forming at least nine fields added over time. Within them are three cairns: two probably formed by clearing surface stone, and the third, at SX 64538835, with a cist that would originally have held a burial.

The southern settlement has four widely spaced hut circles, all of upright-stone walling, in places buried under soil and peat, 5.4 to 6 metres across inside, and three lengths of rubble walling that may be the visible part of a field system. One hut has an inner partition and another a doorway.
