Two hut circles S of Catstor Down

These two hut circles are the archaeological traces of Bronze Age settlement on Catstor Down, part of the extensive pattern of prehistoric occupation across Dartmoor's high ground. The circular stone foundations mark where roundhouses once stood, their inhabitants relying on pastoralism and subsistence farming in a landscape that supported far greater population density than in later periods.

Today the site is understated, as most Bronze Age domestic remains are. Visiting requires navigation across open moorland and an eye attuned to low stone rings in the heather and grass. The hut circles sit within a wider archaeological complex that tells of how Dartmoor was actively used and lived upon during the Bronze Age, before later climate change and cultural shifts led to the abandonment of the high moor.
