Hut circle

This stone hut circle is one of several structures forming a substantial prehistoric settlement on the eastern slopes of Dartmoor. Built during the Bronze Age, these circular dwellings would have sheltered families and their livestock on the open moor, where the landscape was more extensively farmed and settled than it is today.

Today the hut circle survives as a low stone foundation, barely distinguishable from the surrounding moorland. Walking the area, you can trace the outlines of multiple structures across the terrain east of Raddick Lane, a reminder that Dartmoor's apparently empty slopes once sustained a thriving community.
