In his 1932 paper, the antiquarian R. Hansford Worth tested a popular claim that stone rows once linked this circle to Fernworthy Circle. He wrote: "I can find no evidence in support of this statement, after making detailed surveys of the Fernworthy Circle and its associated rows, of the Shuggledown rows and of Scorhill Circle." Nobody has ever agreed on how many stones stand here. Between 1827 and 1896, six named antiquarians each surveyed the circle and reported a different total: Rowe counted 20, Croker 27, Ormerod 29, Murray's Handbook 26, Chudleigh 23, and Brooking Rowe 24.

“Not likely; you don't come in here. The policeman's about the place, and I don't want 'ee," was her cheering reply.”
