Fernworthy Stone Row

Grid ref: SX 6551 8422

Fernworthy Stone Row consists of around 30 standing stones arranged in a roughly straight line across the high, windswept moor. Dating from the Bronze Age, this alignment is one of several mysterious stone rows that cross Dartmoor, their original purpose still debated by archaeologists. Walking the row today, you stand where Bronze Age people stood, though the landscape around them has changed considerably.

The site is best visited in clear weather when you can see the stones in their full moorland context. The exposed position means the row catches both light and shadow dramatically through the day. Fernworthy also lies within an area rich in other Bronze Age monuments, making it rewarding to combine with nearby barrows and cairns if you have time to explore the broader archaeological landscape.
