This scheduled monument is a section of the Eylesbarrow watershed reave, one of Dartmoor's most extensive Bronze Age land boundaries. Reaves are long, low stone walls that divide the moor into blocks and parcels, thought to have been built to manage grazing and define territorial or land-holding divisions across the high moorland. The Eylesbarrow reave system marks the watershed, the high ground that separates water flow across this part of Dartmoor.
On the ground today, the reave appears as a low, often grass-covered stone wall, easily missed by the untrained eye but unmistakable once you know what to look for. Walking these ancient boundaries offers insight into how Bronze Age communities organized and used the moor, and into the deep history layered across Dartmoor's landscape.
