This is a cluster of cairns, burial monuments built during the Bronze Age, several thousand years ago. Each cairn was constructed as a mound of stones, often with a cist (a small stone-built chamber) at its heart to hold cremated remains or grave goods. On Dartmoor, such monuments are common, dotted across the open moor as a reminder of how densely this landscape was used and valued in prehistory.
Today you will find low stone mounds in the moorland south of Langcombe Brook. They are modest in scale, weathered by centuries of exposure, and easily missed unless you know where to look. Walking here, you are treading among the burial places of Bronze Age communities who lived and worked these hills when the moor was more open and farmed than it is today.
