Hut circle settlement near Wedlake

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1003195) describes part of a partly enclosed stone hut circle settlement on the lower north-western slopes of Roos Tor. It survives as a scattering of hut circles, some enclosed or linked by boundaries to a few small irregular paddocks, though most of the buildings are free-standing and unenclosed. On the south-west the settlement is bounded by a territorial reave. About ten huts and some small paddocks lie within later enclosed fields, and those later field boundaries are left out of the scheduling, though the ground beneath them is included. It lies in the parish of Peter Tavy, about 0.6 km south-east of Wedlake Tor and 2.2 km north of Merrivale.

On the open moor about 42 further huts survive. Some are linked to paddocks, two pairs are joined, and most are free-standing. One shows clear internal divisions. The huts range from 2 to 7 metres across inside and are generally walled in stone, some double-faced, between 0.8 and 2 metres wide and on average 1.5 metres high. Where entrances can be seen they generally face south or south-west. A series of tracks cuts the settlement, and the modern surfaces are excluded from the scheduling though the ground beneath is included. Other remains nearby, some scheduled and some not, are outside this scheduling.
