Four hut circles

These four stone hut circles lie on the southern slopes below Leeden Tor, part of a Bronze Age settlement that was never formally enclosed by walls or banks. Such unenclosed settlements are common across Dartmoor and reveal how communities lived and farmed on the moor in prehistory, adapting to the landscape rather than imposing rigid boundaries on it.

The circles themselves are the remains of roundhouses, their stone foundations and rubble spreads still visible among the moorland turf and heather. Walking out to them takes you into the working heartland of ancient Dartmoor, a place where the patterns of settlement and land use have barely changed in four thousand years.
