Enclosure 560m south east of Penn Beacon, forming part of a stone hut circle settlement

This enclosure forms part of a Bronze Age hut circle settlement, one of many scattered across Dartmoor's high moorland. The stone foundations you see today are the remains of domestic life from three thousand years ago, when farming communities built clusters of circular dwellings on the open moor. The settlement sits on the south east side of Penn Beacon, a position that offered shelter and access to grazing land.
Walking the site today, you find yourself among low stone walls and circular ground plans, reading the landscape as people once knew it. This is typical upland settlement archaeology. The enclosures speak of deliberate land use and community, part of the wider pattern of Bronze Age occupation that shaped Dartmoor's character and left its mark on the moorland form we see now.
