White Tor enclosed hut circle settlement

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1007975) describes an enclosed stone hut circle settlement and a later shelter on a gentle south-west-facing slope overlooking the valley of the Colly Brook. The enclosure is 106 metres north to south by 72 metres east to west inside. Its wall is built of double upright stones with a rubble filling, 3 metres wide and up to 1 metre high, with an entrance on the west. The east and west stretches of the wall are lyncheted. It lies in the parish of Peter Tavy, about 0.2 km south-west of Little White Tor and 2.4 km north-east of Peter Tavy.

Seven hut circles make up the settlement: six inside the enclosure, and the seventh attached to the wall and partly covered by it. Their inner diameters run from 3.6 to 5.4 metres, with walls averaging 1.5 metres wide and 0.6 metres high. The later shelter is a small rectangular platform, 4 metres by 3.5 metres and up to 0.3 metres high, attached to the outside of the enclosure wall. It butts the prehistoric wall, so it is more recent than the settlement.

The Dartmoor Exploration Committee excavated at least three of the huts in 1899. They found fire and flint chips, which show people lived there, and one hut held a sherd of pottery of the same date.
