Challacombe Down

Devon

Challacombe Down is a granite tor set in the open heart of Dartmoor, offering the kind of walking that defines the moor itself. The approach is across rolling heathland and grass, with the characteristic mix of open views and gentle shelter that central Dartmoor provides. The tor itself is granite, weathered and low-key, without the dramatic stacking of some better-known peaks, but commanding in its setting.

From the summit you look across working moorland in all directions, with the familiar patterns of bracken, gorse and stone walls that pattern this landscape. It is an honest place, neither remote nor crowded, good for understanding how Dartmoor feels when you step away from the named attractions and simply walk.
