Cairn with a cist, the western one of two between Langcombe Brook and Deadman's Bottom

This is a scheduled Bronze Age cairn, one of a pair that sits on the moorland between Langcombe Brook and Deadman's Bottom. The site is marked by a mound of stones built up around a cist, a stone-lined burial chamber typical of Bronze Age funerary practice on Dartmoor. The cist would once have held human remains and grave goods, though like many such monuments it has been disturbed over the centuries.
Today the cairn survives as an earthwork on the open moor, part of the dense scatter of prehistoric monuments across Dartmoor. Walking the area, you encounter evidence of people who lived and died here thousands of years ago, when the landscape was more open grassland than it is now. The site speaks to how thoroughly the Bronze Age communities used and shaped this high ground.
