Cairn south-west of Lower Hartor Tor

This cairn is a modest but significant remnant of Bronze Age burial practice on Dartmoor, likely built between 4,000 and 3,000 years ago. Like many of the moor's cairns, it would have marked the resting place of someone of standing in their community, built from stones gathered from the moorland itself.

Today the cairn sits in open country south-west of Lower Hartor Tor, where the landscape remains much as it did in prehistoric times. It is one of dozens of similar monuments scattered across Dartmoor, and visiting it offers a sense of how burial sites were distributed across the high ground. The moor's windswept emptiness makes these ancient markers feel immediate and present.
