Cairn 800m ENE of Big Pond

This scheduled monument is a cairn, a stone mound built during the Bronze Age as a burial place or ritual marker. It sits on the exposed moorland roughly 800 metres east of Big Pond, part of the scatter of prehistoric monuments that characterize Dartmoor's high ground. Like many cairns across the moor, it would originally have been more substantial than it appears today, gradually diminished by centuries of weathering and stone robbing.

Visiting the site today, you will find a modest heap of stones among the heather and gorse. The landscape around it is typical upland Dartmoor: open, windswept, and studded with similar ancient remains. It is best approached on foot, either as part of a wider moorland walk or in exploration of the Bronze Age archaeology that makes this part of Dartmoor distinctive.
