Cairn and cist on the northern side of Fernworthy Reservoir, 660m north west of Metherall

This cairn and cist lie on the northern slope above Fernworthy Reservoir, part of the Bronze Age landscape that still marks Dartmoor's high ground. The cist, a stone-built burial chamber, would once have held human remains and grave goods. Such monuments are common across the moor, scattered across ridges and plateaus where Bronze Age communities left their mark on the landscape thousands of years ago.
Today the site sits in open country with views across the reservoir and surrounding moorland. Like many Dartmoor cairns, it has weathered the centuries and bears the marks of the landscape it inhabits. It is a scheduled monument, protected for its archaeological significance and its place in understanding how people lived and died on the moor in prehistoric times.
