Fernworthy Reservoir

Dartmoor Forest, Devon

Fernworthy Reservoir lies in a fold of the moor east of the high northern plateau, near Chagford, fed by the South Teign River. Its concrete dam, faced with local granite, was built between 1936 and 1942 to supply water to south Devon, and the reservoir covers around 37 hectares.

Conifer planting from the 1930s onwards wrapped the western and northern shores in the forest that gives the place much of its character today. The surrounding land is managed by South West Lakes Trust for fly fishing, birdwatching and walking, with brown trout in the water.

The drowned valley is thick with prehistory. Stone hut circles, a stone circle and stone rows lie close by, and in dry summers falling water levels can reveal submerged remains, including an old clapper bridge that once carried a track over the South Teign.
