Blowing mill 260m south east of Teignhead Farm

Devon

This scheduled monument is the fragmentary remains of a blowing mill, located in the upland landscape south east of Teignhead Farm. Mills of this type were used to process local materials, taking advantage of Dartmoor's exposure to steady winds. The site reflects the moorland economy of earlier centuries, when communities made use of natural resources and topography to power industrial processes.

Today the site consists of low earthwork remains and rubble scattered across open moorland. Visitors walking this part of Dartmoor will find little dramatic stonework, but the location itself tells a story. The sparse, windswept terrain that made this an attractive place for a blowing mill is much the same now as it was then, and the site sits quietly within the moorland landscape that shaped it.
