This scheduled monument marks the site of a blowing mill, an essential part of tin processing on Dartmoor. The mill used water power from the Taw River to drive machinery that crushed and separated tin ore from waste rock. Such mills were scattered across the moorland wherever streams provided sufficient flow and gradient, turning raw mineral into usable metal.
Today the site survives as earthwork remains in the river valley south of Tawcroft. The landscape here still shows the imprint of centuries of mining activity, with the Taw carrying the same water that once drove the stamps and frames. Walking here, you move through a working record of Dartmoor's industrial past.
