Tor cairn on Shell Top

This cairn sits on the summit of Shell Top, part of the high moorland landscape that characterises central Dartmoor. Like many of Dartmoor's cairns, it dates to the Bronze Age, when communities built these stone monuments as burial markers and territorial landmarks across the granite uplands. The cairn is a modest but persistent feature of the moor, built from the granite that lies beneath and around it.

Today the site offers a natural stopping point for walkers crossing this stretch of open country. The monument stands as a reminder of Bronze Age occupation on Dartmoor, part of a wider pattern of prehistoric activity scattered across the moor. From Shell Top, the landscape opens out in all directions, characteristic of the exposed terrain that has drawn people to Dartmoor for millennia.
