Hut circle settlement near Hawthorn Clitter

This scheduled monument preserves evidence of two distinct periods of settlement on the moor. The hut circles themselves date from the Bronze Age, when communities built round stone dwellings across Dartmoor's open ground. The circular foundations visible today are typical of that distant era, their stone footings enduring on the exposed moorland for over three thousand years.

Later, in post-medieval times, someone constructed a shelter among or near the ancient huts, a small building adapted to the harsh demands of life on the high moor. Visitors will find the remains scattered across the landscape as you might expect from such age and exposure: the weathered stone traces of Bronze Age habitation and the remnants of later use, all set within the sweeping views that define this part of Dartmoor.
