Watern Tor

Devon

Watern Tor sits on the northern spur of Watern Down, above Gidleigh Common on the eastern side of the moor. It's one of Dartmoor's most striking rock formations, made up of four large granite piles with tightly packed horizontal joints that give them a laminar, layered appearance quite unlike other tors. The Thirlstone at the north end has a distinctive hole through it offering a view through the gap. The southern outcrops are equally impressive. The granite has weathered in a brilliant way, possibly from slow cooling, making it worth closer examination. It sits on the edge of the Okehampton firing range, so check for red flags before visiting.
