The South Teign River is one of the two headwaters of the River Teign. It rises on the moor near Sittaford Tor and White Ridge, on the western edge of Fernworthy Forest, and flows east through the forest and into Fernworthy Reservoir.
Below the dam it continues towards Chagford, where it meets the North Teign near Leigh Bridge and the two together become the River Teign. Since the reservoir was built in the 1940s the name South Teign is generally kept for the river below the dam, while the true headwater above is now marked on maps as Winney's Down Brook.
