Avon Dam Reservoir

Rattery, Devon

The Avon Dam Reservoir lies high on the southern moor, close to where the young River Avon leaves Dartmoor above South Brent. The dam was built between 1954 and 1957, soon after the national park was designated, to supply the towns of the South Hams, and it floods a remote upland valley to the west of Ryder's Hill.

There is no road to the dam. It is reached on foot from the car park at Shipley Bridge, following a good track for around two miles up the Avon valley, first through woodland and then out onto open moor. That remoteness makes it a quiet spot for walking, wild swimming and birdwatching.
