Round cairn near Sourton Tors

This scheduled monument comprises a round cairn and an associated stone hut circle, situated on open moorland south of Sourton Tors. The remains date to the Bronze Age, when Dartmoor's uplands supported scattered pastoral communities. The cairn, built from stone heaped over a burial or ceremonial deposit, and the nearby hut circle, the stone foundations of a domestic dwelling, represent the everyday and ritual life of these early inhabitants.

Today the site lies among heather and rough grass, with views across the high moor. The stone structures are modest and require some attention to locate and understand, but they are part of the dense archaeological landscape that makes Dartmoor distinctive. Walking here, you are moving through country that has been inhabited and worked for over four thousand years.
