Dewerstone Hill enclosures

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1020241) describes two enclosures and hut circles on the summit of a steep-sided promontory above the meeting of the rivers Meavy and Plym. It lies in the parish of Meavy, about 0.9 km north of Shaugh Prior.

The larger enclosure is 220 metres long by 170 metres wide inside, marked by two parallel rubble walls that cut the promontory off from the land around. The walls are mostly loose rubble, 4 metres wide and up to 0.7 metres high, with a gap of about a metre between them, probably wider originally. A gap through the walls is the site of an original stone-faced entrance passage, now 12 metres long by 2 metres wide. There is no walling by the steep slopes round the southern part. It is taken to be a Neolithic hilltop enclosure.

The smaller rectangular enclosure lies inside it, 75 metres by 55 metres, bounded by a partly lynchetted rubble bank up to 1.3 metres high. Its wall is attached to an earlier hut circle, a rubble bank 0.8 metres high round a circular space 9.4 metres across, with a small annex on its east side (an earthwork 0.8 metres wide and 0.3 metres high). The second hut is butted to the inside of the Neolithic enclosure and is an oval 5 metres by 4 metres surrounded by rubble. The smaller enclosure and the two huts are taken to be Bronze Age.
