Ring cairn near Branscombe's Loaf

This ring cairn sits on Corn Ridge at around 450 metres, part of a Bronze Age burial cemetery that once served a small farming community on the high moor. Ring cairns are circular stone monuments built around funerary deposits, their form suggesting ritual space as much as burial marker. The cemetery's position on the summit suggests these Bronze Age people chose prominent, open ground for their dead, making the most visible statement they could within the landscape.

Today you will find a low stony ring among the moorland vegetation, weathered by millennia but still legible as human work. The site sits within a wider scatter of cairns across this part of the moor, part of the web of Bronze Age settlement and belief that shaped Dartmoor. The view from here is vast, taking in the moorland plateau. This is a place that rewards slow walking and looking, and careful footing on rough ground.
