Shelstone Tor

Shelstone Tor sits high above the West Okement Valley, facing Black Tor across the water. What you see today are several distinct rockpiles, the broken remains of what was once a much larger tor, with extensive scattered granite spreading north towards the Valley of Rocks. One outcrop is capped by a logan stone marked with pitted rock basins. Despite modest height, the views down the valley are excellent, reaching to Lints Tor in the distance, and the granite offers shelter from wind in any direction. The tor is tricky to reach: either cross the weir at Vellake Corner from Meldon Reservoir, or approach via Sourton Tor from the west. Note that the Okehampton firing range starts at Black Tor, half a mile south east.
