Partially enclosed hut circle settlement near Horn's Cross

This scheduled monument comprises a cluster of stone hut circles set on the high moor northwest of Horn's Cross. The roundhouses, built of stone and dating to the Bronze Age, show evidence of partial enclosure, suggesting a small domestic settlement from perhaps three to four thousand years ago. Such sites reveal how people lived and farmed on Dartmoor when the climate was warmer and the moor more densely populated than today.

Visiting today, you find the characteristic stone foundations and low walls scattered across open ground. There is little drama in ruins this old, but there is quietness. You stand where Bronze Age families built their homes, herded livestock, and worked the land. The site lies within the wider pattern of prehistoric settlement that shapes Dartmoor's archaeology and reminds us of the deep human history beneath the modern moorland.
