Ouldsbroom Cross

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1003293) describes a wayside cross known as Ollsbrim or Ouldsbroom Cross, at a fork in the road between Dartmeet, Ollsbrim and Sherwell. It is a single piece of roughly dressed stone 1.6 metres high, tapering upwards and roughly rectangular in section. Its arms have largely been removed, and holes for hanging gateposts have been drilled in it and filled with lead and iron. It dates from the 13th century. It lies in the parish of Widecombe in the Moor, about 0.7 km south of Corndon Tor and 1.6 km west of Ponsworthy.

It came originally from this spot but was moved to Town Farm, Leusdon, about 3 kilometres away, in about 1825, and was put back in its present position by Newton Abbot Rural District Council in about 1957. It was one of the parole limits for prisoners held at Princetown during the Napoleonic wars. The cross is also listed at Grade II.

Crossing's A Hundred Years on Dartmoor agrees about the move: it says the cross was taken from its original position to Town Farm, which he gives as nearly two miles away, where it served as a gatepost.
