Ponsworthy

Ponsworthy is a hamlet in the steep valley of the West Webburn River on eastern Dartmoor, about two miles from Widecombe-in-the-Moor. A row of thatched cottages climbs the hill on the southern side. Dartmoor Explorations dates Honeysuckle Cottage to the late 16th or early 17th century, and says Rose Cottage was built in 1888 after fire destroyed its predecessor. The former forge worked until the end of the Second World War.

North of the hamlet are the old mill, of the late 16th or early 17th century, the old bakehouse (now a house) and Ponsworthy House, built about 1800 with a granite porch with Doric columns. At the foot of the hill the road crosses a stream at the Splash, an old ford, beside a two span granite footbridge thought to be 18th or early 19th century.

Ponsworthy Bridge is Grade II listed (1986). Historic England's description says the flattened arch is probably early 19th century, while the large granite abutments are probably 17th century or older, and the bridge is about 3 metres wide. The churchwardens of Buckland-in-the-Moor paid 5d in 1664 for repairing it. A datestone in the parapet reads 1666 and 1911, though the block is damaged. When the hamlet itself began is not known.
