Great Combe Tor

Devon

Great Combe Tor sits on open access moorland above Peter Tavy in the far west of Dartmoor, reached easily by the public footpath that runs from Cocks Tor Hill down to the village. Unlike most Dartmoor tors, the rock here is metamorphic bedrock rather than granite, giving the crags a much darker appearance. The north side is the most impressive, with a splendid series of crags jutting from the hillside above bracken slopes. Small, stunted oaks anchor themselves to the rock faces, creating an appealing mix of vegetation and stone. From here you overlook Peter Tavy Combe, a valley Crossing selected as one of his Gems, and can see across to Brent Tor and White Tor.
