Flat Tor

Grid ref: SX 6091 8153

Flat Tor lives up to its name: a small, flat granite exposure sitting at 540 metres on exposed moorland where the surrounding land is almost equally high. You are well above 500 metres throughout the walk here, making it an attritional affair across boggy moorland dotted with river heads. The tor itself is modest and sits on the edge of the Merrivale firing range, marked by military posts. The real draw is the solitude and the water-filled pit nearby, which marks the crash site of a naval Sea Vixen in May 1965 where both airmen escaped unhurt; debris can still be found. Reach it by following the military posts north from Rough Tor, or via the East Dart river and Sandy Hole Pass.
