Enclosure near Beardown Man

This scheduled monument forms part of a dispersed prehistoric settlement clustering on the eastern slope of Conies Down Tor. The site comprises a stone hut circle and associated enclosure, typical of Bronze Age domestic occupation on Dartmoor. Such structures speak to patterns of settlement that took advantage of moorland slopes for shelter and grazing.
Today the remains are visible as low stone foundations and field boundaries, best read by walking the ground itself. The wider settlement context, with other hut circles and enclosures nearby, reveals how Bronze Age communities occupied the moor in family groups. The site sits within Dartmoor's richly layered archaeological landscape, where such remains are common yet each placement tells something of how people lived and moved across the moor.
