This cist is a small stone burial chamber dating to the Bronze Age, when Dartmoor's uplands were more intensively settled and used. Built from stone slabs, it would once have held cremated remains or grave goods. The cist survives as a low, rectangular structure, easily overlooked among the bracken and heather of this quiet part of the moor.
Located southeast of Roughtor Plantation near Okehampton, it sits within a landscape scattered with similar Bronze Age monuments. Visiting the site means walking into the deep past of Dartmoor, where such burial markers speak of communities who lived, farmed and died on these hills millennia ago. The monument is scheduled for its archaeological importance.
