This scheduled monument is a cairn built over a stone burial cist, dating to the Bronze Age. It lies on the open moor northeast of Grimspound, part of the scattered landscape of burial sites that speak to Dartmoor's long use as a place of settlement and ritual. The cairn would once have been a more prominent marker on the moorland, visible across the landscape and built to contain and honour the dead.
Today it sits among the characteristic features of Bronze Age Dartmoor: bronze-age villages, field systems, and funerary monuments spread across the high ground. Walking this part of the moor, you encounter the layered past underfoot and on the horizon, a reminder of the communities who lived and died here thousands of years ago.
