Two cairns with cists on Ter Hill

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1002592) describes two round cairns with cists on the lower north-west-facing slopes of Ter Hill, overlooking the River Swincombe where it leaves Foxtor Mires. The scheduling falls in two areas. It lies in the parish of Dartmoor Forest, about 3.1 km south-west of Hexworthy.

The northern cairn is a circular stony mound up to 4.6 metres across and 0.3 metres high. Its cist is up to 1.2 metres long and 0.5 metres wide, with the cover stone displaced to the north-east and resting over one corner. Mr Burnard partly excavated it in 1904 and took out the soil from the cist, but found no objects, only a stone wedged in the base.

The southern cairn is a circular stony mound up to 5 metres across and 0.3 metres high, with a cist up to 1.3 metres long and 0.6 metres wide and no cover stone. Early partial excavations by Mr Burnard found a broken beer bottle, and showed that earlier digging had removed one side of the cist and made it collapse. The record gives no first name for Mr Burnard. Other remains nearby are outside this scheduling.
