These two cairns, each containing a stone cist or burial chamber, are Bronze Age monuments that predate the industrial workings nearby by thousands of years. They sit on the high moorland east of Whiteworks tin mine, among the scattered evidence of Dartmoor's mining heritage. The cairns are modest in scale but represent the enduring presence of prehistoric burial practices across the moor.
Today, the site offers little to the eye but its context tells a story. Here, on open moorland, you can stand between two very different chapters of Dartmoor's past: the Bronze Age communities who built these monuments, and the 19th-century miners who worked the tin lodes nearby. The landscape itself, bare and windswept, has changed far less than human use of it.
