Hexworthy
Hexworthy is a scattered hamlet on the central moor a little west of Dartmoor, a few farms and cottages spread along the lanes above the West Dart. Its focus is the Forest Inn, long a refuge for walkers, riders and anyone caught out by the weather, and one of the genuinely remote pubs of the moor. The hamlet sits in the old Forest of Dartmoor, the royal hunting ground that gave the high moor its name, and the farms here work some of the most exposed land in Devon.
The country around Hexworthy is thick with the remains of tin. The O Brook, which runs down to the Dart nearby, was worked for centuries, and Hexworthy Mine was still producing into the twentieth century, leaving wheel pits, leats and spoil that are easy to find and rewarding to trace. Combestone Tor is a short distance away with one of the easiest great views on the moor, and the walk down to the Dart at Dartmeet takes very little effort for the reward.
