Sourton Down Cross near Aliceford Farm

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1020270) describes a wayside cross known as Sourton Down Cross beside a minor road 520 metres north-west of Prewley. It is a tall rectangular-section cross cut from a single granite slab up to 2.13 metres high, 0.45 metres wide and 0.3 metres thick at the base, with short arms 0.51 metres wide. It carries a Romano-Christian inscription reading PRINCIPI / IURIVOCI / AUDETI. The stone is thought to date from the 6th century and to have been reused as a wayside cross in the 14th or 15th century. The initial letters H (Hatherleigh) on the north face, T (Tavistock) on the south, O (Okehampton) on the east and L (Launceston) on the west show it was reused again as a route marker. It was moved to its present place when the A30 was altered in the 1980s. It is also listed Grade II. It lies in the parish of Sourton, about 2.1 km north-west of Shelstone Tor.
