Pillow mound near Hen Tor

Pillow mounds are low, elongated earthworks created to manage rabbit populations. This example forms part of Hentor Warren, a medieval and post-medieval rabbit farm spread across moorland north east of Hen Tor. Rabbits were a valuable resource on Dartmoor, providing meat and fur, and warrens like this were carefully tended and defended.

Today the mound is a subtle feature in the landscape, best seen from certain angles or in low light. Walking across this part of the moor, you can trace the warren's earthworks and understand how people once managed the high ground. It is a Scheduled Monument, protected for its archaeological significance.
