Long pillow mound by Shavercombe Brook, Hentor Warren

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1015741) describes a pillow mound beside the Shavercombe Brook, on a gentle north-west-facing slope above the valley of the River Plym, part of Hentor Warren. The warren has around 50 pillow mounds and 10 vermin traps between Spanish Lake and Shavercombe Brook and covers about 180 hectares. It existed by 1807, when Lord Boringdon leased it to Peter Nicholls, a warrener from Sheepstor, with Hentor Farm probably the warren house, and it was worked from Ditsworthy from shortly after 1815 into the 1930s. It lies in the parish of Shaugh Prior, about 0.3 km east of Shavercombe Tor.

The mound is a flat-topped rectangle of soil and stone 69.3 metres long, 6.3 metres wide and 1 metre high, with a ditch 4 metres wide and 0.5 metres deep round it from which it was dug. A narrower ditch, 0.8 metres wide and 0.3 metres deep, runs parallel to the north-east side and may be an animal run where vermin and rabbits were trapped, since vermin tend to approach by a route that gives them cover and gullies like this could have been dug to steer them. Two lengths of rubble bank to the west and south-east are not scheduled. The monument is in the care of the Secretary of State.
