Great Staple Tor
Devon
Great Staple Tor consists of several weathered granite piles stacked on top of one another, with a large turf-covered area between the two main stacks that gives the tor its most distinctive feature: a striking avenue of rock. The name should really be 'Great Steeple', honouring these huge granite towers. At 455 metres, it sits on the inner moor south of Merrivale and offers impressive views across West Dartmoor to Great Mis Tor, North Hessary Tor, Plymouth Sound and Cornwall. The scattered rocks across the summit bear witness to the weathering of this granite citadel. It makes an accessible walk from Merrivale car park, often linked with nearby tors like Cox Tor and Roos Tor.
