Square enclosure near Meacombe

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1002587) describes an enclosure on the crest of a south-west-facing slope overlooking small valleys of tributaries of the River Teign. It is an almost square area about 20 metres by 20 metres outside, with rounded corners, terraced into the hillside. It lies in the parish of North Bovey, about 2.6 km east of Chagford.

The banks differ round the sides. The east bank is a substantial earth and stone bank up to 4.5 metres wide, the south is a smaller upright-stone wall with earth, the west is a steep scarp up to 0.9 metres high with a slight inner bank, and the north is a slighter bank. The walls seem to widen and extend a little at the two northern corners, and there is no clearly defined entrance.

Aerial photographs suggest the enclosure belongs to a field system, which is not scheduled because it has not been formally assessed.
