This scheduled monument is the earthwork remains of an ancient enclosure, likely dating to the Bronze Age or Iron Age. Set on the open moorland southwest of Meacombe, it represents one of many such settlements that once dotted Dartmoor when the climate was warmer and more people lived on the high ground.
Today you would find low stone or earth banks marking the boundary of the enclosure. The site sits within the wider prehistoric landscape of the moor, among field systems, cairns and other settlements that tell the story of ancient Dartmoor's use and habitation. Its survival depends on the continued open character of the moorland.
