Cullever Steps Pool

Belstone, Devon

Grid ref: SX 6054 9225

This is a pool on the East Okement River a little way downstream of Cullever Steps, about 160 m from the stepping stones, and wild swimmers use it. It is remote, below Belstone Tor and close to the Okehampton firing range, so check the firing times before you go. The water is cold moorland water and its depth changes with the rain.

Visitor guides call it Cullever Steps Pool, and people often shorten that to Cullever Steps. The Steps themselves are the stepping stones and fords upstream, and the Bronze Age ring cairn lies on the far side of them, about 380 m from the pool. Nothing we have found records how the pool came to be. If you know, please tell us.

Go deeper with Dartefacts

Dartefacts is a database of Dartmoor sites with far more close-up detail than we can show here, and it is the best place to go deeper. Dartefacts is free to use, and nobody has to pay to look things up. If you want more, a yearly subscription adds 10-figure grid references, map zoom down to 1:25,000 and lists to tick off the places you have visited, and it helps keep the site going. We would encourage you to subscribe.
