These coaxial fields form part of a larger field system that spreads across Shapley Common, a landscape shaped by Bronze Age farming communities. Coaxial fields, where parallel boundaries run in the same direction, are a distinctive mark of prehistoric agricultural planning and suggest organised, long-term use of the moorland for crops and grazing.
Today the fields survive as banks and boundaries visible across the open moor north of Hookney Tor. They are a quiet reminder of how Dartmoor's high ground was farmed thousands of years ago, before the climate shifted and the moor became less habitable. Walking here, you can trace the pattern of ancient decisions about land division written into the landscape itself.
