Coaxial field system and prehistoric settlements at Kestor

Kestor is a complex of Bronze Age settlement remains and field systems on the open moorland south of Chagford. The coaxial field pattern, with its characteristic parallel divisions, speaks to organised land management and a community with the resources and knowledge to reshape the landscape. Scattered stone circles, cairns and hut circles mark where people lived and worked on this exposed plateau.
Today the site is returned to rough grass and heather, and the boundaries are traced by low stone banks and sometimes only by eye. Walking here, you move through layers of prehistoric time, though the wind and weather have softened all edges. This is Dartmoor as it was used and inhabited long before the modern commons took shape.
