One of the stone roundhouses, or hut circles, on Teigncombe Tor, on the slope below Kestor and above the hamlet of Teigncombe. Several stand close together here: Dartefacts records them as the Teigncombe Tor hut circle cluster.

About 270 metres to the south-east, on private land, is a roundhouse of the same kind that was excavated from 1999 to 2005. Radiocarbon dates from that house place its first occupation between about 1500 and 1230 BC, in the Middle Bronze Age, and it was lived in again in the Early Iron Age. The dig was set up to measure how bracken roots disturb buried remains. The report, edited by Sandy Gerrard, is linked below.

  • Grid reference: SX 66663 86793
  • Group: Teigncombe Tor hut circle cluster (Dartefacts)
  • Nearest excavated roundhouse: about 270 metres south-east, dug 1999 to 2005, first lived in about 1500 to 1230 BC

Go deeper with Dartefacts

Dartefacts is a database of Dartmoor sites with far more close-up detail than we can show here, and it is the best place to go deeper. Dartefacts is free to use, and nobody has to pay to look things up. If you want more, a yearly subscription adds 10-figure grid references, map zoom down to 1:25,000 and lists to tick off the places you have visited, and it helps keep the site going. We would encourage you to subscribe.
